At the Jan. 16 meeting the Southern York County School District board approved district‑level stage‑1 curriculum maps and two new middle‑school course offerings, and adopted four elementary novels for classroom use.
Dr. Hughes and Dr. Recker summarized the curriculum work completed by district teachers. The approved stage‑1 master maps cover beginner band (7th–8th), Algebra I (noting common accountability for the Pennsylvania Keystone Exams across grades), Geometry, English 10, 4th‑ and 5th‑grade science, an EMT course developed to align closely with certification guidelines, and Health I and II. Dr. Hughes described a joint middle/high school teacher collaboration that embedded additional standards for younger students taking Algebra I so that 7th and 8th graders and 12th graders remain aligned for the Keystone assessment.
The board approved middle‑school additions described in the memo: flight and space (science) and a middle‑school beginners band. Administration said stage‑1 maps become live on Eduplanet the business day after board approval and that parents will be introduced to course information at curriculum nights (high school curriculum night and the 6th grade transition night). Dr. Recker indicated the middle school changes will be available at parent/teacher conference events noted in the meeting.
On elementary literature, the board approved adoption of Because of the Rabbit, Charlotte’s Web, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, and The Chocolate Touch for classroom use. Those adoptions were presented under the speakers/novel adoption agenda item and approved without recorded objections.
Administration said the EMT course map follows requirements used for certification and that maps will be posted publicly on the district Eduplanet site once published. Board members asked when parents could view the guides; staff pointed to scheduled curriculum nights and agreed to notify the board by email when maps go live.
