Anne Martin, speaking as a member of the public and representing student civic interests, asked the board to "advocate for Election Day to be designated as a non‑instructional day" so newly eligible 18‑year‑old students and staff can participate in voting without time conflicts. Board members discussed trade‑offs: possible benefits for civic education and the school board of elections needing more polling locations were balanced against scheduling continuity and childcare concerns for working parents if classes are held the day before and after a standalone day off.
Several board members voiced support for considering Election Day as non‑instructional. One board member observed many districts already give the day off and that using a school day can serve as a civic learning opportunity. Others noted practical constraints in aligning calendars with neighboring districts, collective bargaining agreements and state testing dates.
Superintendent Doctor Krausser and the administration said the draft calendar results from staff and parent consultation and exceeds required instructional minutes. Administration recommended the board provide feedback about Election Day and other draft items; the calendar will be returned for action at the January 27 regular meeting.

The board will vote on a final calendar on Jan. 27 and asked the administration to gather additional staff feedback on the Election Day option and to consider whether a professional development day or other rearrangement could minimize disruption.
