City manager announces leadership appointments, warming center availability and local business openings

City Manager Ken Filipiak told the Mentor City Council on Jan. 21 that Ron Zack has been named Mentor's new fire chief and that Lauren Vernon has been named director of public works.
Filipiak also reminded residents that the city’s hometown heroes banner program will return in 2025, with banners displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. He announced that the city will keep the senior center open through 10 p.m. on the coldest forecasted day to provide a warming facility for residents who may need to charge a phone or take shelter if power is lost during extreme cold.
Filipiak listed several new businesses that have opened in Mentor: Jet’s Pizza at 6854 Center Street; D and D Metery at 8659 Twinbrook Road; E and E Angels Learning Academy at 9423 Mentor Avenue; and Abundance Day Center and Services at 7541 Mentor Avenue. He also noted that the last day for Christmas-tree recycling drop-off is Friday, Jan. 31, at Walsh Park, Bellflower, Garfield and Krieger Parks.
