Whitehall-Coplay to launch six-week ‘Phenomena of Science’ middle-school after-school program

District staff told the Education Student Activities Committee on Jan. 13 that a new after-school STEM program, titled "Phenomena of Science," will run at the middle school beginning in February.
The program will be free to students and led by two teachers (Mrs. Loff and Mrs. Nies). It will run in two back-to-back six-week cohorts, meeting Mondays from 2:30 to 3:40 p.m.; each cohort can accommodate up to 24 students, for a maximum of about 48 participants across both cohorts. Activities described include hands-on projects such as slime-making, thermoplastic modeling, animal dissection, creative circuit design and energy-transfer experiments.
Staff said the program is mixed-grade (6–8) and that sign-ups are already open; space will be capped and enrollment is expected to be first-come, first-served. Transportation options include parent pickup or the district activity bus. Staff noted past high demand for after-school STEM offerings and said they may expand the schedule in future semesters if interest remains high.
No cost was charged to participants and no formal board action was required at the committee meeting; staff said they will report back to the board with highlights at the program's conclusion.
