Student council reports and superintendent updates: student achievements, vaping outreach and Cool Schools Dunk fundraising goal

Northern Middle School — The board heard a student-member report and superintendent updates at its Jan. 14 meeting.
Karen (staff) read the December 2024 student-member report from Cadence, who was not in the meeting because of weather. The report highlighted: Haley Sisler and Terry Lewis winning gold medals in bowling at the State Special Olympics; Emma Hostetler of Northern High School being named soccer player of the year; Serenity Bunner selected as a student page for the Maryland State page program; student career visits to First United Bank and Trust; and fundraising and service projects across middle and high schools, including Northern Middle raising $759 and several toy and canned-food drives.
Cadence’s report also noted student council activities and upcoming leadership events: the GCASC executive board meeting on Jan. 21, the Winter Leadership Conference on Jan. 25 and the MASC Convention in Ocean City in March. Southern Garrett High School planned an anti-vaping evening with speaker Joshua Maine for Feb. 4.
Superintendent Dr. McCartin thanked staff and families for adapting to the district’s first virtual learning day of the year, and said principals reported the day ‘‘was going well.’’ He reiterated safety as the first priority when deciding between virtual days, delays or closures and noted that bus drivers worked to get students to and from school safely during recent winter weather.
On fundraising, Dr. McCartin announced the Cool Schools Dunk will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, and that this year’s fundraising goal is $25,000. The superintendent said all funds raised will remain in Garrett County to benefit the Garrett County Unified Sports Program.
Board members thanked students and staff for their reports and noted several upcoming events, including a Jan. 28 white coat ceremony for students.
