Board approves first reading of food services policy adding nondiscrimination language

The Allegheny County Board of Education approved first reading of Policy EF, the food services policy, Jan. 14, adding nondiscrimination language prompted by a policy review.
Mister Llewellyn introduced the change and said the nondiscrimination language was requested after an MSDE audit of district policies. He told the board the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Education want explicit nondiscrimination language included in the food services policy. "This is something that the USDA, and the U. S. Department of Education wants us to include in our food service policy specifically," Llewellyn said.
The board voted unanimously to approve the first reading. Llewellyn said an accompanying change to the regulation, which will include civil-rights procedures, is expected at the next meeting for final approval.
The policy change does not take effect until the board completes the second reading and any accompanying regulatory updates; no implementation date was specified.
