Wicomico school board unanimously approves revised 2024–25 calendar after five snow days

The Wicomico County Board of Education voted unanimously Jan. 14 to revise the 2024–25 school calendar after five days of missed instruction caused by winter weather.
The board approved a calendar revision that converts Feb. 3 (previously a professional development day) into a regular student attendance day; moves the final student day from June 11 to June 12 with early dismissals on June 10–12; and changes April 16 from an early dismissal to a full day while making April 17 an early dismissal. The district staff said these changes account for three make-up days; the district is investigating a waiver or other options for the two remaining missed days.
"We are required to have a certain number of days by state regulation," said Mrs. Miles, who presented the revised calendar to the board. "One of the originally built-in makeup days had already passed, so these adjustments ensure we meet the requirement and minimize disruption for students and families."
Board members moved and seconded the motion and adopted the calendar in a roll-call vote. The vote for the revised calendar was recorded as: Palmer — aye; Hazel — aye; Plots — aye; Beacham — aye; Brown — aye; Ennis — aye; Chair Malone — aye. The board chair cast the deciding vote when required; the motion carried unanimously.
