District investigates taunting incident at Spring Valley varsity basketball game; discipline to follow under DASA and district code

The superintendent briefed the board about an incident at a varsity basketball game in which a visiting individual taunted a Spring Valley player. He said the matter was reported quickly and that Wappingers Central School District identified the individual and will apply discipline under its code of conduct and under DASA (the New York anti-bullying statute/regulations).

“Within 2 hours all the powers that be…were notified of the issue,” Interim Superintendent DeCarlo said. He thanked district investigators and staff, noting the matter was handled quickly and that disciplinary follow-through would be conducted by Wappingers in accordance with its policies; DeCarlo said his conversations with Wappingers’ superintendent indicated follow-through would occur.

DeCarlo praised the Spring Valley varsity boys team for how it handled the incident and said district staff are exploring restorative or dialog opportunities with the other district’s athletes. “We’re looking to create, maybe a community circle with their student athletes and our athletes,” DeCarlo said.

He also said the district’s investigators (including Mr. Carton and Mr. Russo) and staff acted promptly and that, because of privacy and disciplinary rules, the district cannot disclose details of disciplinary outcomes.

Why it matters: The episode drew public attention and prompted district leadership to confirm rapid investigation and inter-district communication; the board was briefed but took no disciplinary action itself during the meeting.
