Representative Lucy Dathan, chair of the committee, opened the session and introduced members. “My name is Lucy Dathan. I represent the 142nd District, which is part of Norwalk and part of New Canaan,” Dathan said, noting her background as a CPA and finance professional.
The meeting consisted primarily of member introductions and procedural items. Senator Rob Sampson, the Senate ranking member, said oversight of state government had been a long-standing interest: “Government transparency and accountability is something very near and dear to me,” Sampson said. Several other legislators spoke briefly about their backgrounds and interest in working with state auditors and agency oversight.
Committee staff and legislative office representatives were identified, including Clerk Greg Wolf, Assistant Clerk Gabe Marks, Legislative Commissioners’ Office staff and Office of Legislative Research and Office of Fiscal Analysis staff present for support and attendance.
Under procedural business, Dathan announced that the committee’s agenda for the next meeting would be posted to the Connecticut General Assembly website by 6 p.m. on Jan. 22. The committee then took a motion to adjourn; the chair recorded that the motion was moved by Senator Wilcox and seconded by Representative Ken Gucker. The transcript does not include a recorded roll-call or a numeric vote tally for the adjournment.
The first meeting ran about 13 minutes and focused on setting a schedule and establishing the panel’s purpose rather than debating policy or taking substantive votes. The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m., per the announcement during the Jan. 21 session.
The session is the committee’s first meeting during the 2025 legislative session and will be the forum for future hearings on agency audits, reports from state auditors, and legislation related to government accountability, as members indicated during their brief remarks.
