Public Safety and Security Committee votes to draft items 1–37 for public hearings

The Public Safety and Security Committee convened for its first meeting and voted to draft items 1 through 37 for public hearings, committee Chair Rep. Pat Boyd said.

The vote came after brief opening remarks and a round of member introductions. "It's you're voting to hear more about it. You're voting to have a public hearing. You're not voting to support one way or the other," Rep. Pat Boyd said, describing the drafting vote as a procedural step to allow public review and testimony rather than committee endorsement of any measure.

The motion to draft the full omnibus list of agenda items 1–37 was moved by Rep. Greg Howard and seconded by Rep. Gigi Van Carlo. Rep. Greg Howard, the committee ranking member, said the package reflects a compilation of proposals "that have come our way" and indicated his caucus was generally prepared to approve a voice vote so the measures could advance to public hearings.

The committee approved the motion by voice vote with no recorded roll call; the chair said the clerk would keep the votes open for one hour to allow members to record their positions before noon. The committee also announced it will likely meet again one week from the meeting date in the morning; the exact time and room will be posted by the clerk. After the vote the chair recessed the meeting until 12:00 p.m.; the meeting then adjourned.

The session included short statements from members representing many towns and districts across Connecticut and introductions from committee staff. No substantive debate on the individual items occurred during this organizational meeting; specific bill texts, sponsors and committee analyses for items 1–37 were not presented and are "not specified" in the meeting record. Public hearings will be scheduled to allow testimony and examination of each item.
