Senator Kreider told the committee that Senate Bill 181 asks the Indiana State Board of Nursing to adopt rules and regulations to include trauma‑informed care in nursing curricula. He said the nursing community had concerns about required training in a prior, broader bill and that this narrower approach asks the Board to add trauma‑informed care into curriculum standards.
Heather Harris of the Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses testified in support and noted continued coordination with nursing organizations. Katie Feeley, CEO of the Indiana State Nurses Association, said ISNA was neutral and recommended the bill use “recommend” rather than “require” in its language so nursing schools could adapt existing curricula while the state considers a broader, multi‑profession approach (Representative Vanessa Summers’ House bill was mentioned as a related effort).
Senators voted to advance the bill; the roll call recorded unanimous support and the measure moves to the Senate floor.
