Board explains 'flexible instruction' days, how they differ from traditional snow days

Gateway School District administrators spent part of the meeting explaining how the district uses the state’s five flexible instruction days and how that differs from traditional snow days.

“The state kind of relaxed allotted five flexible instruction days or remote days for schools. So we’re allotted five flexible instruction days,” a district administrator said during the meeting, explaining that the district expected to use four by the next school day. After the five days are used, the district may require make‑up days or choose additional remote days; the district also tracks instructional hours to meet the statutory requirement for the school year.

Officials said the district still must meet the equivalent of 180 instructional days (or the required hours) and that flexible instruction days are a tool to avoid adding make‑up days when weather forces remote learning. District staff acknowledged confusion among parents who expect a snow day to mean no instruction; administrators cautioned that remote days still include learning time and that elementary grades can pose device‑access challenges. The district said it takes steps — for example, ensuring kindergarten and first‑grade devices and chargers are sent home in advance — but that younger students present greater logistical challenges for full remote participation.

Administrators also urged teachers to avoid scheduling major tests on days immediately adjacent to remote instruction because students who are learning from home may find it harder to focus. The board said families can check the district calendar for any preplanned makeup days; officials noted individual schools sometimes still declare an old‑style snow day depending on circumstances.
