Weber County commission approves first reading to amend solid-waste fee schedule, trims county administrative charge

The Weber County Commission on Tuesday approved the first reading of an ordinance to change how residential solid-waste collection fees are billed in unincorporated western Weber County and the Uinta Highlands.

Sean Wilkinson, a county staff member presenting the item, told commissioners the amendment "adjusts the fee schedule for residential solid waste collection and disposal services in unincorporated Western Weber County and the Uinta Highlands to account for contractual increases." He also noted that the county's monthly administrative fee would be reduced from $2.00 to $1.50.

Wilkinson said the change will produce small quarterly savings for residents: "Residents with 1 container in Western Weber County will see a decrease of 79¢ per quarter, and residents in Uinta Highlands will see a decrease of 85¢ per quarter with these changes." The ordinance is a routine, scheduled update to align the fee schedule with contractor cost changes and county administration calculations.

Commissioners moved and seconded the first reading during the meeting; the motion carried on a voice vote. The vote was recorded as "Aye" by the commissioners present and the first reading will move forward under the county's legislative process.

The amendment applies to Section 16-2-9 of the Weber County Code (Solid Waste Fees). Because this was a first reading, the ordinance is not yet final; further readings or administrative steps required by county code will follow before the fee schedule change becomes effective.

The commission's action came as part of a wider consent and action agenda that included contracts and budget items. Staff said the ordinance change was driven by contractual increases and county cost allocation updates.
