St. Mary's County accepts $5,000 drug-diversion grant for training and disposal program

The St. Mary's County Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to accept a $5,000 law-enforcement grant from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators to support pharmaceutical diversion investigations, training and equipment.
The grant will be accepted on behalf of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and requires no local match, county officials said during the commissioners' Aug. 19 meeting. Captain Dan Alioto and Aaron Shoemaker, the sheriff's fiscal manager, presented the item to the board and answered questions about how the money will be used.
County officials said the $5,000 has in prior years been used to replace equipment and to pay for training so deputies can keep current with national trends in pharmaceutical diversion. "We go to a training session in Annapolis once a year as well," Captain Dan Alioto said.
Alioto also reminded residents that the sheriff's office maintains a 24-hour drop box for unwanted prescription medication. "We collect them, and then we dispose of them, quarterly through the DEA," he said.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to authorize Commission President Jack Russell to accept the grant; the motion passed and was announced by the chair as carried.
The county record shows this is the fourth year the sheriff's office has received funding from this program. No matching county funds were required for this award, and no further conditions were specified at the meeting.
The board's action enables the sheriff's office to proceed with purchases and training under the grant; further operational details will be handled by the sheriff's office and fiscal staff.
