The president said he would establish a new Department of Government Efficiency and take steps to end what he described as government censorship.
"To restore competence and effectiveness to our federal government, my administration will establish the brand new department of government efficiency," the president said. He also said he would sign an executive order "to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America," and asserted that the state should not be used to "persecute political opponents."
The speech did not provide statutory language for creating a new cabinet department, which ordinarily requires congressional action or detailed administrative reorganization plans. The speech also did not specify how the anti-censorship order would be applied across federal agencies, or what standards would guide enforcement or adjudication of disputes over content moderation and government communications.
