District Youth Council reads land acknowledgment at Northfield school board organizational meeting

The District Youth Council’s Equity and Inclusion subcommittee presented a proposed land acknowledgment and had the statement read at the Northfield Public School Board’s Jan. 13, 2025 organizational meeting.
On behalf of the District Youth Council, a presenter said the council proposed that a land acknowledgment be formally adopted by the Board of Education in accordance with Policy 9.50, adopted June 2021. The presenter said the land acknowledgment statement will be read at the organizational meeting, at the meeting closest to Indigenous Peoples Day and at both the high school and ALC graduations.
May Bowers, introduced from the District Youth Council, read the district’s land acknowledgment statement: “The Northfield School District recognizes that we reside on the homeland of the Wapakoote scribe of the Dakota Nation. We acknowledge the wrongdoings, previous and ongoing, and strive to repair and strengthen our relations with indigenous peoples.”
The transcript records the proposal to have the board formally adopt the acknowledgment in accordance with Policy 9.50, but it does not show the board taking a formal vote to adopt the statement during the organizational meeting. The packet references Policy 9.50 (adopted June 2021); any formal adoption would need to be recorded in a subsequent action item if taken by the board.
