The Leon County School Board on Dec. 10 voted to advertise an amendment to Policy 1600 (classification specifications) but later discovered that the agenda entry included a fiscal impact line the superintendent said was a mistake.
Board members discussed whether the item — an update to a job’s classification specification intended to reflect construction-and-maintenance duties — should be treated as a stand-alone administrative update or whether it was tied to a separate reclassification that would carry an $89,100 fiscal impact.
At first the board approved the superintendent’s recommendation to advertise the amendment; during the meeting staff clarified that the action as now written was intended only to update the class specification and that any reclassification (and its fiscal impact) would be brought as a separate agenda item. Several board members said the dollar amount on the agenda created confusion.
Board member Smith moved to reconsider the earlier approval; Doctor Nicholas seconded the motion to reconsider, which passed. A later motion to approve the class-specification update without the dollar amount was moved and seconded but failed 3–2. Members asked staff to return with a position-description (PD) comparison showing duties and the rationale for any reclassification and its fiscal impact.
