Court approves adding electric meter for sheriff’s complex ahead of jail expansion

Angelina County commissioners on Jan. 7 authorized adding a separate electric meter under the county’s TXU Energy contract for the sheriff’s department building at 2311 East Lufkin Avenue to accommodate new jail construction and increased electrical load.
Tom Selman, who identified himself as the sheriff, explained the county will install new transformers and separate service so the sheriff’s office will be on a different meter from the jail. He said the existing pad transformer cannot carry the combined load of the sheriff’s office, current jail and the new addition. TXU Encore will set new transformers on a pole in front of the sheriff’s office, and the county will relocate a 500 kW generator to the sheriff’s office so dispatch and the 911 communications center remain on backup power. The jail addition will also include provisions for two new generators.
Why it matters: separating meters and upgrading transformer capacity and generators are intended to ensure uninterrupted power for critical dispatch and jail operations during outages and to meet the electrical demand of the new jail addition.
Outcome: commissioners approved the meter addition by voice vote; county staff and consultants will coordinate with TXU on transformer and generator installation and with the county auditor to add the meter to the existing TXU Energy contract.
