Commissioners approve $78,100 contract to update airport layout plan for 6,000-foot runway design

The Angelina County Commissioners Court on Jan. 7 approved a $78,100 contract with KSA, funded from COVID CARES funds, to update the Angelina County Airport layout plan so the runway can be designed for a 6,000-foot length and to support the federal grant process.
Gary Letnick, the airport manager, told the court the county’s existing layout plan had documents for a 1,600-foot extension but the county is considering completing the expansion in phases. “We’re looking at alternate plans to do it in sections and do 600 feet first,” Letnick said, adding that the 600-foot increment would allow some jets to operate at full load on hot days.
The contract funds will revise the planning documents to first accommodate a 600-foot extension that can later be extended to 1,600 feet. Commissioners voted to approve the contract by voice vote.
Why it matters: updating the airport layout plan is a required step to qualify for Federal Aviation Administration approval and federal grant funding for runway work. The phased approach aims to address current operational limits that sometimes force larger aircraft to divert on very hot days.
Next steps: county staff will execute the contract with KSA and proceed with updated planning documents to support future FAA and federal grant steps.
