Later in the meeting the district introduced Odessa, a canine trained to detect THC and other narcotics, along with her handler (a lieutenant who described training background). District staff said Odessa will assist in vape- and narcotics-detection rounds at schools. The handler noted high background nicotine levels can make nicotine detection difficult and described Odessa’s primary trained odor as THC; district staff said Odessa and a therapy dog will begin visits across schools and that initial school walk-throughs have already occurred.
Both items were presented for information; the board did not take separate formal votes on these recognitions.
