The Bay District School Board approved a draft agreement with Florida Atlantic University to serve as a possible external operator for Cedar Grove Elementary School if the state does not grant the district a requested extension.
District staff described Cedar Grove as in turnaround status and said the district has invested in leadership and targeted interventions that showed recent improvement. The state requires that, as part of the turnaround process, the district either identify an external operator, convert the school to a charter, or take other corrective actions; the district must submit any external-operator agreement to the Department of Education by the end of January if the district does not receive the requested extension.
Superintendent staff said they will present an extension request to the state board the day after the meeting; if the state grants the extension there will be no need to implement the FAU agreement. If the extension is denied, FAU — which has worked with the district on professional development and turnaround supports — would serve as the external operator under the parameters in the draft contract. The board voted to approve the draft agreement to ensure the district could meet the state deadline if required.
