Bay School Board adopts rewritten charter-school policy 8.701

The Bay District School Board voted to adopt a rewritten charter school policy, identified as policy 8.701, during its meeting. The change updates district procedure to align with current state statutes governing charter schools.

Board officials said the policy was rewritten using the NEOLA template to reflect changes in state law. The board packet and public hearing process were completed after a 30-day advertisement, and the board moved to approve the change at the meeting.

Superintendent-level staff and board members said the update was driven by state statute 1002.33 and by the possibility that one or two charter applications may be submitted soon; adopting the policy now would allow staff to process any applications under the new rules. "This brings us up to date with state statutes," a board member said during the hearing.

During roll call the motion to adopt policy 8.701 passed unanimously. Board members also publicly acknowledged district staff who liaise with charter operators; one board member singled out Michael Grady for his work with local charters, saying, "Thank you so much. He does a yeoman's efforts..." The board noted the policy aligns district procedures with the state Department of Education requirements and will guide staff review of any incoming charter applications.

The policy was presented as part of the board's advertised public hearing items and will be incorporated into the district policy book. No additional action was required beyond the adoption vote.
