Commissioners approve subdivision plat to transfer school site land to Board of Education

The Board of County Commissioners on May 29 authorized the Board of Education of St. Mary's County to submit and record a subdivision plat for the Leonardtown Educational and Recreational site.
Greg Clemons presented the plat to commissioners, describing the elementary school site and noting the proposed right-of-way and a drainage easement shown on the submitted drawings. Clemons said the county needs the easement for drainage; the plat shows approximately 16 acres identified for transfer to the Board of Education.
Commissioners and school staff discussed next steps. The school system plans to include the project in its education facilities master plan and then seek state capital funding in the FY2013 State Capital Improvement Program. Clemons said a public forum on the watershed plan and other permitting steps were in the near-term schedule, and if Leonardtown approves the subdivision at its June meeting, mylars would be returned to the county for signature and recordation.
Commissioners moved and seconded the motion to allow submission of the subdivision and to proceed with recording steps; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
Commissioners emphasized the approval at the May 29 meeting covers only the subdivision and transfer of the described acreage; any substantive changes to the overall school plan would require further review and Leonardtown approval.
