Facilities director flags boiler failures, steam valve outages; seismic grant application submitted

Facilities Director Tony Tiano told the board on Jan. 9, 2025, that a gas valve failure rendered Boiler No. 1 out of service at one district building and that the district has been operating on a single boiler while replacement parts were ordered. Tiano said the manufacturer's original company no longer exists and staff located a compatible part from Honeywell priced at about $2,510 (not including labor), and the district ordered the part with expedited shipping.

Tiano reported three steam valve failures in recent weeks that caused condensate drips into classrooms; replacement valves have been ordered and installed for most affected rooms. He said operations staff are managing system runs to avoid further damage while parts arrive and that cold weather increased urgency to complete repairs.

On capital efforts, Tiano said ZCS (engineering) submitted a $2,500,000 seismic capital improvement grant application for the Milano North building; the application package, including schematics and engineering documents, was to be hand-delivered the next day.

Board members thanked facilities staff for responsiveness and for participation in the middle school oversight and design process. Tiano said he and the project team have been consulting with engineers, energy‑efficiency advisors and other specialists to ensure maintainability of the new middle school.
