St. Mary's County modifies state agreements to continue funding homeless women's crisis shelter and transitional housing

The Commissioners of St. Mary's County voted May 23 to approve modifications to intergovernmental agreements with the State of Maryland Department of Human Resources that fund homeless services, including the homeless women's crisis shelter program (MD1657) and the emergency and transitional housing services (ETHS) grant for FY2018.
Lori Jennings Harris summarized the modification as part of routine grant adjustments that the county has received in prior years to support shelters including 3 Oaks and Angel's Watch. At the meeting Jennings Harris provided the revised amounts: $7,421 for the homeless women's crisis shelter and $81,506 for ETHS.
A commissioner asked whether the women's shelter demand equals the men's side; Jennings Harris replied the numbers are "comparable," and noted many women staying at the shelter have school-aged children. The motion to approve the intergovernmental-agreement modifications and authorize the commissioner president to execute related documents carried on a unanimous voice vote.
Commissioners heard there was continued need for family- and child-inclusive shelter services and that the county has received similar state agreements in past years.
