The Commissioners of St. Mary's County adopted a resolution on April 19 waiving county landfill fees for Christmas in April projects scheduled for April 30, 2016.
Department of Public Works and Transportation director presented the request and Doreen Klines (listed in the meeting packet as executive director) and Howard Thompson, president of Christmas in April, described the program's local history and volunteer effort. Program leaders said the St. Mary's County chapter has operated for 26 years and has completed 693 residential repairs and 17 community projects, using the skills of more than 39,800 volunteers and providing roughly $6.5 million in free repairs.
Klines told commissioners the typical homeowner served is elderly or handicapped and that average household resources are low: “Our average homeowner receives less than $1,500 a month,” she said, describing why fee relief is important to the program's ability to haul debris and operate on a volunteer day. Commissioners approved the resolution by voice vote; the public transcript records the motion and the chair saying “Ayes have it.”
Ending: The waiver covers landfill fees associated with the program's 2016 projects so organizers can use their donated materials and volunteer labor without cutting the number of homes served because of disposal costs.
