Pharr leaders accept Healthier Texas pledge and honor staff graduates; city recaps winter events

Abel Molina, interim director of special events for the City of Pharr, asked the commission to join the city's pledge for the Healthier Texas (formerly "It's Time Texas") community challenge and the commission agreed to accept the challenge together.
“We won four years in a row last year, so we wanna make this one the fifth one,” Abel Molina said, inviting commissioners and the community to participate in free wellness classes and community events the city will sponsor.
Assistant City Manager David Friedland, Assistant Chief Albert Gonzalez and Assistant City Clerk Alessandra Garcia were recognized for completing the nationally accredited Certified Public Manager program, a 14‑month leadership course. Friedland and the other honorees thanked city management for the opportunity and said they will apply the program training to city service.
Judy Wonsalas, director of city communications, gave event recaps for December. She said Pharr's EMS whole‑blood initiative was the subject of a recent press conference and that the city posted a video about the program on social channels. She also summarized the Winter Texan tamaladas outreach, which included visits to multiple RV parks and engagement with long‑term winter residents.
Wonsalas reported the city's New Year's Eve ball‑drop drew 10,185 people, exceeding the prior year's attendance, and she said staff received positive feedback, including visitors who traveled from other areas to attend. City event staff promoted an upcoming 116th city birthday celebration scheduled for Jan. 16 in downtown Pharr.
Commissioners and staff thanked event teams and acknowledged the community participation in city activities. No formal action was required on the event recaps or the pledges beyond accepting the community challenge and recognizing staff achievements.
