Committee approves allowing agency designees on Teacher's Fund for Retirement board

Chair Kristin Rohrs introduced Senate Bill 2134 to allow the superintendent of public instruction and other named officials to appoint an agency designee to the Teachers Fund for Retirement (TFFR) Board of Trustees when the principal cannot attend. Rohrs said the superintendent currently serves on many boards with schedule conflicts and sometimes cannot attend both.
Jim Offgren, legislative liaison for the Department of Public Instruction, testified the department supports the change and also supports an amendment that requires any designee to be a member of the superintendent's office. Committee members debated a short drafting change to specify that the designee must come "from the agency," and Senator Lee moved the amendment; Senator Brownberger seconded. The committee adopted the amendment by voice/roll and then moved a due-pass recommendation on the bill as amended. The roll call recorded a unanimous 6—0 vote in favor; the committee will advance the bill for further consideration.
