District outlines winter assessments and school improvement plans for identified schools

District leaders told the Manchester School Committee on Jan. 13 about the district’s winter assessment schedule and federal requirements after three schools were identified for targeted support.
Students will take district and state interim assessments in late January: kindergartners through second graders will complete the I‑Ready mid‑year diagnostic; grades 3‑8 will take the New Hampshire SAS Interim Assessment; and English language learners will take the ACCESS test administered between late January and March. District staff said the interim assessments help familiarize students with standards and provide data to guide MTSS decision‑making and classroom strategies.
Superintendent Dr. Camille and district directors also informed the board that, per state and federal guidance, Southside Middle School, Parkside Middle School and West High School were identified as Targeted Schools in Improvement (TSI). As part of that designation each school must develop and implement a school improvement plan in the first year and the district must monitor and ensure required components are met. The district’s network directors will work with each school to align plans with existing ABC goals and to address underperforming subgroups.
District leadership signed the required assurance documents with the New Hampshire Department of Education confirming the district’s commitment to implement and monitor school improvement plans. Network directors and school leaders will continue collaboration to produce plans that meet federal components and support subgroup improvement.
Board members asked a question about state special education aid and whether anticipated reductions would affect district revenue; district staff said the estimate used when the tax rate was set included the state estimate, and final distributions were not yet received but staff did not expect a major variance this year.
District staff said parents will receive a letter later in the week with details about the state assessments and timing.
