The Manchester School District Special Committee on Athletics reviewed a proposed mission statement for district athletics at its Jan. 8 meeting and suggested several edits to reflect local context.
The draft presented said in part: "Manchester School District Athletics is committed to excellence. Opportunities are [to] develop skills through individual instruction, peer interaction, and competition...Culture is focused on [values] which is equitable, inclusive, bold, innovative, transparent, and respectful." The text also linked athletics to academic, social, emotional and physical student development.
Committee members praised the character-building language but recommended adding language or web links that acknowledge Manchester's size and diversity and the district's athletic history. "I was wondering if there could be some sort of reference to offering athletics in a way that reflects the size of the district and its diversity," said Dr. Power. Dr. Killeen suggested placing historical context such as state championships or hall of fame information on the athletics web page rather than lengthening the mission statement.
Members also discussed coordinating the mission and site content with the district's equity steering committee and student voice initiatives. The presentation was treated as informational; staff will incorporate suggested edits and provide a revised version at a future meeting.
No formal vote to adopt a final mission statement was recorded at the Jan. 8 meeting.
