District recognizes attendance gains and honors teacher with National Board Certification

Alamogordo Public Schools honored multiple campuses on Jan. 15 for attendance improvements and recognized a district teacher who earned National Board Certification.
Truancy and attendance official Charles Turpin presented the Attendance Celebrations awards. He named Sunset Hills Elementary as the district’s best elementary school for attendance and Yucca Elementary as the most improved elementary, noting Yucca’s excessive-absence rate fell from 5% to 3%. For secondary recognition, Holloman Middle School was named best secondary school; Mountain View Middle School was singled out for improvement, with Turpin noting excessive-absence rates at that campus declined from about 20% at an earlier point to roughly 6%.
Turpin said the district had 31 students with perfect attendance at Mountain View, and he commended teachers, administrators and parents for the work that contributed to the improvements.
Later in the meeting, Holloman Elementary Principal Kathy Rausch introduced Andi Soudin as the district’s newest National Board Certified Teacher. Rausch said National Board Certification is a "rigorous and voluntary process" and noted only about 3% of teachers nationwide hold the credential. Rausch said Souton (transcribed in meeting as "Soudin/Souton") was in her 11th year with the district and has taken on leadership and mentoring responsibilities.
Board members congratulated award recipients and the certified teacher during the recognition segment.
