The Alamogordo Public Schools Board of Education voted on Jan. 15 to award the Chaparral Middle School architectural and engineering design contract to Decker LTD.
Interim Superintendent Michael Crabtree described the procurement process as including in-person interviews and said the Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA) participated in the evaluation. "We were happy with the companies that put in and went through our process, including in-person interviews, with the evaluation team. PSFA was a part of this process and agree with this recommendation," Crabtree said.
The motion to accept the evaluation team's recommendation carried by voice vote; the board recorded no opposition. District staff said PSFA would fund a substantial portion of the eligible project costs (the meeting noted PSFA covers roughly 60% of eligible expenses). Crabtree and staff did not provide the contract dollar amount at the meeting.
Board members emphasized oversight and community involvement through the design process; one member urged broad participation from the community and the board during design reviews. The district indicated it will bring construction schedule updates to the board at future meetings.
Next steps include executing contract 005-2025-C and issuing a purchase requisition to begin detailed design work. Capital Outlay staff will report quarterly to the board on schedule milestones.
