McAllen ISD plans applications for $1.5M in CDBG funds for inclusive playgrounds, tracks and parking

McAllen ISD administration informed trustees Jan. 17 of its intention to apply with the City of McAllen for fiscal‑year 2025–26 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Purchasing Director Laura Williams said the district will submit four applications totaling approximately $1.5 million by the Feb. 6 deadline. The projects under consideration are:
• An all‑inclusive playground at Juan Seguin Elementary (approx. $390,000);
• An all‑inclusive playground at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary (approx. $390,000);
• A community track at William B. Travis Middle School (approx. $350,000);
• Phase 2 — a parking lot at Dorothea Brown Middle School (approx. $400,000), associated with a community track lighting project already underway.
Williams provided schematic locations and explained CDBG eligibility requires projects that benefit the community and meet HUD criteria. The district said it has previously applied for similar projects and will present the applications to the city board per CDBG process.
Trustees received the item as informational; the district will notify the board of application results once awards are announced.
