As the start of the 2025 budget season approached, the Suffolk City School Board voted Jan. 16 to require two itemized reports to accompany the superintendent's proposed budget: an itemized, Excel-formatted accounting of school-board operating expenditures for FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24, and an administrative-staff survey listing names, job titles, work locations, supervisors, salaries and contract end dates for all administrative employees at the school administrative office and in each school.
Board members said the documents are necessary for oversight and to inform prudent budgeting decisions. The motion asked that the financial report be subdivided into specific categories such as purchased services, travel and training, dues and subscriptions, materials and supplies, and food for meetings, and include vendor name, date, purpose and the board member tied to the expenditure where applicable.
Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon and staff said the administrative-staff data and many budget line items exist in divisional records but compiling itemized historical board expenditures will take staff time; they requested the board provide time to prepare the materials. The motions were passed by recorded votes and staff were asked to deliver the requested spreadsheets by Feb. 27, 2025, the date set for the board's special budget meeting.
