Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon announced Jan. 16 that Suffolk Public Schools will implement a bell-to-bell cell phone policy beginning Monday, Jan. 6, 2025: students must have smart devices turned off and stored (locker or backpack) upon entering school buildings, except for approved medical or other exemptions.
Gordon said the division will provide exemption forms for parents to request permission for medical reasons; teachers will be informed of permitted exceptions through the division's form and procedures. He said staff will rely on progressive redirection: an initial conference with students, parent contact, and then further discipline only if needed.
The superintendent also told the board the policy covers smart devices beyond cell phones, including smartwatches and smart glasses, and that regulations and the full policy text are posted on the SPS K'12 website.
