The Greater Clark County Schools Board of Trustees approved a revised 2024-25 school calendar that adds makeup days and adjusts graduation dates for several high schools.
Superintendent Dr. Hartless and staff said recent severe winter weather forced the district to cancel an entire week of school. To recoup missed instructional time, the board approved making Feb. 17 (Presidents’ Day) a makeup day and adding May 22 as another makeup day after the originally scheduled last day of school. Staff said May 6 (Election Day) will not be used as a makeup day because there are no district elections in May.
Because of construction and capacity concerns at Jeff High, the board also approved moving some graduation ceremonies: New Washington High School will hold graduation Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m.; Charleston High School will hold graduation Saturday, May 24 at 1 p.m.; and Jeff High’s graduation will be moved to Sunday, May 25 (time to be determined). District staff said the move aims to reduce traffic and allow transportation support, including buses from centralized parking locations if Jeff High’s venue or fairgrounds are used.
Staff described a move toward synchronous remote instruction if future weather closures occur, once kindergarten through 12th-grade students have completed training on district platforms. The superintendent said the state allows three asynchronous remote days; after that the district prefers synchronous learning but did not adopt an immediate change to policy, saying training and readiness are prerequisites.
Trustees approved the calendar by voice vote.
