Madison Local School District board members and staff on Jan. 14, 2025 discussed recruiting challenges for substitute teachers and the district's approach to placing less-experienced substitutes, but made no formal policy changes.
Staff and board members said the pool of available substitutes has shrunk and the state's changes have allowed people without bachelor's degrees to serve as substitutes. Board members asked how the change affects classroom management and age-appropriate placement; staff said the district tries to avoid placing recent graduates in high school buildings where they might have been classmates with students, instead assigning them to elementary settings where they are shadowed by building subs and monitored by principals.
Board members noted some parents who sub only want elementary assignments to match their schedules. Staff said some buildings are harder to staff than others and that administrators try to keep closer oversight in places with younger students. The board did not vote to change existing substitute hiring requirements during the meeting.
The discussion followed the board's approval of a slate of substitute and long-term substitute contracts and a $10.70 hourly minimum for certain substitute/assistant roles.
