Historic Preservation Commission reports 2024 activity: 51 applications and $8.56 million in investments

At the January 2025 meeting the Opelika Historic Preservation Commission received staff’s annual report for 2024. Staff reported the commission processed 51 applications in 2024: 15 were approved at the staff level (primarily fences, trees and minor work) and 36 were approved by the commission. No applications were denied. The breakdown of project types included 11 new-construction projects, 18 additions or alterations and 2 demolitions.
Staff reported reported investment totals of $6,803,000 for the downtown district, $1,437,000 in the Geneva District and $328,000 in Northside, for a combined total of $8,561,347 in reported private investment associated with projects reviewed by the commission in 2024. Staff said it had sent one enforcement letter regarding a vacant, deteriorated house adjacent to Reynolds Outdoors and that staff and the property owner were attempting to coordinate a resolution.
Staff also confirmed it filed the required annual report with the State. The commission noted its next scheduled meeting is Feb. 13, 2025.
