Commission approves aluminum storefront, weathered-steel details at 715 First Avenue

The Opelika Historic Preservation Commission approved design plans for 715 First Avenue (the former Grama Mokas location) at its January 2025 meeting. The commission authorized four new openings fitted with black aluminum storefronts, a service window, a single entry door for coffee service, a double entry to bakery seating, and two double casement windows for the seating area. The proposed work includes weathered (Corten) steel panels set back six inches from the facade at window bases, and a rolled-steel canopy over the main entry with horizontal cable‑hung awnings elsewhere.

A representative identified in the record as Jeremy Clark of Compass Construction described the proposed approach as “the aluminum storefront, like at the record store,” set behind the arch to emphasize the arch form. Clark explained the weathered steel material: “the steel we would use here is a special type of steel. It's called Corten,” and described how its rust forms a protective surface. Commissioners questioned whether the weathered steel would streak or stain the sidewalk; Clark and staff said a clear sealer could address any future staining and that sealing could be applied if maintenance issues arose.

Staff recommended approval of the black aluminum storefronts, the weathered-steel panels recessed six inches to emphasize wall thickness, the rolled-steel canopy and the cable-hung awnings. A commissioner moved to approve the application with a provision that the city could require remediation if rust staining became a maintenance problem.
