County approves emergency repairs after sewage backup at Fire Station No. 5

Lowndes County commissioners approved emergency repairs to Fire Station No. 5 on Bemis Road after staff reported a sewage backup during an abnormal rain event that damaged floors, drywall and equipment.
Staff said the November 6 rain event caused a three-inch backup of sewage at Station No. 5. County crews called a service company to remove flooring and two feet of drywall above the finished floor; bedroom furniture and miscellaneous items were also damaged, staff said. An insurance adjuster has visited the site and staff expect insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
Because the station could not operate normally, staff classified the work as an emergency to restore an essential government service. Staff worked with Kellerman Construction—identified as the original contractor—and received a proposal of $79,380 to perform the repairs. The board voted to approve the emergency repair and authorization proceeded without further discussion.
Staff said they had filed a claim with the county’s insurer and that an adjuster visited the site; county officials expect the insurer to cover the work. The board’s action authorized the county to proceed with repairs so the fire department can return to service at that location.
