Long Elementary highlights ELA growth, multilingual support; recognizes teacher and staff at Lindbergh board meeting

Long Elementary staff presented student-achievement and growth data to the Lindbergh Schools Board of Education and honored school community members during the board meeting.
Principal Christina Phillips and Assistant Principal Dr. Kopel reviewed English-language arts benchmark results for grades K–5, saying the district-wide ELA goal is 80% of students scoring in the average or higher quintiles and that Long set a local goal of 83%. The presentation highlighted subgroup growth — including for students with individualized education programs (IEPs), multilingual learners, and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch — and noted measurable growth from fall to winter for multilingual learners.
Phillips thanked the board for adding a multilingual teaching assistant this year and said Long now has two full-time adults working with multilingual students, allowing both pull-out and push-in instructional models. The principal described classroom practices supporting student goal setting and proficiency scales in student-facing language, the creation of R&R (reset/relax/recharge) spaces in classrooms for self-regulation, and high participation in extracurriculars such as service club and music programs.
The board and staff recognized Tim Waters as Long Elementary’s Teacher of the Year and Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year; Andrea Kibler was honored as support-staff member of the year for the 2023–24 school year. Two students, Paul Stanzi and Hannah Peterson, received certificates as student honorees.
The presentation included examples of classroom goal-setting, teacher participation in national conferences, and community collaboration: Long students met with the mayor of Crestwood to vote on a playground design for Crestwood Park.
No formal board action was required; staff invited questions and the board offered praise for subgroup-achievement reporting and the addition of multilingual support staff.
