Shady Hill Elementary wins state PBIS honor; student art displayed at National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C.

"We are so proud of the work of our students. Great job, Shady Hill," the district staff member said during the weekly wrap-up video announcing the awards. The staff member identified the PBIS recognition and noted Shady Hill was the only district school to receive the state-level model school award for 2023–24.
Students and chaperones traveled to Washington, D.C., where the school’s ornaments appeared on the Florida Christmas tree near the National Christmas Tree and the White House, according to student remarks in the video. The trip included visits to the U.S. Capitol tunnels and a stop at a congressional office, where students met Congresswoman Kat Kamick and gave an ornament to her office.
A student narrator said, "I even gave her an ornament from 1 of our artists. My favorite part was meeting her office dog, Maddie. She was real sweet." The video also included classroom remarks from several students about what they love about Florida, such as Kylie Buizane, a student at Shady Hill Elementary School, who said, "I love living in Florida because of the sunsets and how they color the sky."
The wrap-up also carried a schedule note from the district: "Monday, January 20, 2025 is Martin Luther King Junior Day. Schools will be closed," the district staff member said, calling the day "an important time to provide service and remembrance of doctor Martin Luther King Junior and his legacy."
The recognition, national display and school trip were presented in the school’s weekly video update; the district did not provide additional details in the recording about the number of students who traveled, the specific state office that issued the PBIS model school award, or accompanying costs.
