Palm Beach Opera outreach brings young singers to Mandel Public Library auditorium

Young singers from the Palm Beach Opera performed in the Mandel Public Library auditorium to introduce children to opera, Soprano Maggie Kinebrew said.

The outreach program placed performers in a small, informal setting where children and their parents sat on the floor and in chairs. "What these opera singers can do with their voices is otherworldly," Kinebrew said. "I would just love for them to leave with a sense of what opera really is, and maybe a little bit of an excitement around classical music as an art form." She added outreach helps correct misconceptions, noting that many people think opera is about "Big woman with horns and a very, like, kind of voice."

Dressed casually in jeans and T-shirts, the singers and a pianist — described in the program as a pianist who plans to be a conductor — aimed to make classical music accessible to children who had not heard opera before. The segment said the Palm Beach Opera's outreach program brings performers into community venues so the public can witness their work and potentially become long-term audience members.
