At the Jan. 9 Portage County Board of Commissioners meeting, benefits staff described why the county’s self‑funded health plan administered by Medical Mutual of Ohio will not cover weight‑loss medications for employees.
Why it matters: Commissioners received the explanation in response to employee inquiries. Coverage decisions affect employee out‑of‑pocket costs and which clinical options are available under county benefits.
During a discussion prompted by an employee request, a benefits specialist identified in the meeting as Susan (benefits specialist) said Medical Mutual “as a whole does not cover weight‑loss as a treatment option” under the county’s self‑funded arrangement and that the medications can cost up to “$1,000 a month per person.” She told commissioners the plan offers other resources, including registered‑dietitian consultations, physician‑directed care, chronic‑condition management programs, a Weight Watchers discount and a wellness reimbursement for gym membership of up to $120 per quarter.
Susan said she contacted Medical Mutual and that it is “very rare for self‑funded plans” to cover the medications because of cost and potential side effects. She added that some of the newer medications are treated as maintenance therapies that could require ongoing payment if a patient remains on them. The benefits specialist encouraged employees to create accounts on Medical Mutual’s member portal to access available programs and resources.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions during the exchange; one commissioner noted the county is self‑funded, which staff confirmed, and staff said they would help employees seeking individualized guidance. No vote or policy change on coverage was taken at the meeting.
Ending: Staff indicated they would continue to assist employees one‑on‑one and that the county will maintain current wellness and chronic‑condition resources available through Medical Mutual.
