Lansing names Joseph Gates permanent fire chief; two captains promoted

The Lansing City Council and city staff on an evening meeting recognized promotions in the Lansing Fire Department, installing Joseph Gates as permanent fire chief and promoting two captains.
City officials introduced Joseph Gates, who had served with Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 since July 2000 and in recent months had been interim chief for the previous organization. Gates was formally presented with his badge in a pinning ceremony attended by family and colleagues.
The city also promoted Mark Alligood to captain after more than two decades with the department, and Kirk Mackey to captain; Mackey was noted as one of the department’s arson investigators. The presentations included remarks praising the professionalism and local experience of the promoted firefighters.
Council members and the mayor offered congratulations from the dais, and Council member Gene Kirby — newly elected council president at the same meeting — thanked the department for its service. Kirby said, “I will start off by thanking everybody for your confidence in me, and I want to get on the fire department bandwagon.”
The presentations were ceremonial; no formal council action was required beyond recognition. The council adjourned the public portion of the meeting after the acknowledgments and moved on to routine business.
