The Monroe County Council unanimously approved creating a new personnel account (11066: stormwater technician) in fund 1197 (Stormwater Management) and appropriated $84,752 to cover salary costs for that position.
Lisa Ridge of the highway department said the position had been approved by council on Nov. 12, 2024; during budget hearings the classification and exact salary were not finalized. Ridge said recent staff changes led to internal promotions and that interviews were scheduled to fill the technician role. She also said the fund has a substantial cash balance — the auditor later confirmed a cash balance of $4,595,861.67 as of Jan. 7.
Councilors voiced support for the position, emphasizing the county's flooding and stormwater needs, and thanked highway crews for extended work during recent winter storms. The council approved the appropriation on unanimous roll call.
Why this matters: The stormwater technician position is intended to increase the county's capacity for stormwater inspection, maintenance and project work amid rising flood concerns. Staff explained the hire will be filled through a pending interview process, and there is a plan to promote from within where qualified candidates exist.
The highway department will proceed with filling the position and report back as hires are completed.
