Monroe County Council elects Jennifer Crossley president, Peter Iverson president pro tem; fills multiple citizen and liaison seats

Jennifer Crossley was unanimously elected president of the Monroe County Council at the council's organizational meeting Thursday evening, Jan. 14. The council also elected Peter Iverson as president pro tempore and approved several citizen appointments to county boards and commissions.
The election followed nominations from councilors and brief remarks supporting Crossley's leadership. "I do accept," Crossley said when asked whether she would accept the nomination. Councilor Peter Iverson also accepted his pro tempore nomination. The roll call votes for both positions were unanimous.
Why this matters: Leadership and liaison assignments shape how council business is scheduled and how council members represent the body on outside boards and commissions. With one council seat vacant, the council limited some liaison appointments to allow the incoming member to participate on Jan. 28, while filling a few seats immediately so those boards can meet and maintain quorum.
Council actions included accepting the resignation of Eric Spoonmore from the Capital Improvement Board and approving citizen appointments: Anthony Sottile (Alcoholic Beverage Commission, 1-year term), Kirby Brown (Convention and Visitors Bureau, 2 years), Fred Schultz (Economic Development Commission, 4 years), Evelyn Harrell (Parks and Recreation Board, 4 years), Erice Kiesling (Redevelopment Commission, 1 year), Maria Douglas (Women’s Commission, 2 years) and Jeff McKim (Capital Improvement Board, 2 years). The appointments passed unanimously on roll call.
The council also made two interim council-member liaison appointments to prevent quorum gaps: Councilor David Henry was named to the Planning Commission and Councilor Wilts was named to the Waste Reduction District Board; both appointments passed unanimously.
Counsel and staff said the council will revisit full liaison assignments at the Jan. 28 meeting after the council is at full membership. The council president noted some appointments were delayed so the newest council member could weigh in at that later meeting.
The meeting included public thanks to outgoing council president Trent Decker for his service; Decker received a plaque from council leadership. The council adopted the amended meeting agenda by voice vote at the start of the session.
