Board approves confidential settlement; members debate scope of redactions

The Little Miami Local School District Board of Education approved a confidential legal settlement Jan. 16 after discussion over how much of the document should be redacted for privacy and personnel reasons.
Board members agreed that student names and other personally identifying information should be redacted. Some members urged less redaction so the board could see who facilitated individualized education program (IEP) meetings and whether any personnel patterns warranted board attention. Others said redaction was appropriate to protect students and families.
One board member told colleagues they would vote no if the document remained ‘‘too much redacted’’ and asked that the minutes record that reason. The superintendent said personnel matters are typically handled by administration and that persistent personnel concerns would be brought forward in personnel reports.
The board approved the settlement in a roll-call vote. Several members asked staff to place on the Jan. 28 agenda a discussion about whether the board wants to see less-redacted agreements moving forward.
