Board reviews proposal to allow sixth-graders in middle-school sports; vote set for February

Davidson County Schools staff presented an informational proposal on Jan. 6 to permit sixth-grade students to participate in middle-school athletics (except tackle football, which state law restricts). The board did not vote on the change but set the item for a decision in February after a request for more data and community input.
Coordinator for athletics Drew Hackett said the objectives are to increase participation, allow coaches to field full teams and provide earlier skill development under trained coaches. District staff recommended amending board policy 6.48.3, section b1, to permit sixth-grade participation in most sports; South Davidson Middle School was cited as a local example currently allowing sixth-grade play.
Board members and community speakers raised safety concerns, particularly around mismatches in size and maturity between sixth- and eighth-graders and potential injury risks cited by local healthcare providers. Medical concerns about head injuries and repetitive stress were raised by a community healthcare provider who said she consulted orthopedic specialists and urged caution.
Board members requested additional data before a vote: eligibility counts by grade and gender, roster sizes, projected participation and the effect of changed eligibility rules under recent state policy updates. Trustees also asked for a parent survey; staff agreed to prepare a community survey and return with requested numbers and analysis for a vote at the Feb. 3 meeting. The proposal as presented would not immediately alter booster-club usage; representatives told the board booster programs typically add roster spots after school-team selections.
