Sunnyvale Human Relations Commission recommends dropping two study issues, defers Japanese American memorial study

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — The Sunnyvale Human Relations Commission on Jan. 17 recommended that the City Council not advance two proposed 2025 study issues and deferred a third for later review.

In a 3-0 vote with Commissioners Camacho and Rosenfeld absent, the commission recommended that the council drop DPW 22-08, a review of the city’s park-naming policy, and OCM 24-01, a North Sunnyvale Quality of Life Improvement Master Plan. The commission also voted 3-0 to defer OCM 25-01, a study to explore establishing a Japanese American incarceration memorial in Sunnyvale. All three items will still be visible to the council; the commission’s actions were recorded as recommendations to be considered at the council’s study-issues workshop.

The staff presentation summarized each study issue and included a recommended disposition for commission consideration. “The staff recommendation in this case is to drop the study issue,” Fernanda, the staff presenter, said regarding the park-naming proposal. She made a similar recommendation for the North Sunnyvale master plan, citing an ongoing community needs assessment that staff said could address many of the concerns that the master plan intended to study.
